To ensure we can provide the best service for you, you will need to get some information for us to begin our research.
When asking cousins and siblings or that great aunt with all the cats questions about your family, here are some questions to ask:
Do you have any documents such as birth, marriage or death certificates I could please see/copy for reference on dates?
Do you have any photos of (relatives/ancestors or ancestor’s siblings)?
What memories do you have?
Do you know where they lived and worked?
Do you have any contact information for any of your cousins/siblings etc. that you could also speak too?
Do you know if anyone else in the family has either begun or done a family tree?
Do you ever remember being told anyone else’s stories for example did your parents ever speak of their grandparents etc?
Are there any skeletons in the closet anywhere you should be aware off so that there is no upset or embarrassment to anybody?
Can we stay in touch incase I have questions at a later date?
(for any missing documentation) ask who would have it.
Repeat this with as many people as you can possibly speak too, Ask ‘open-ended’ questions – ‘What do you remember about our grandfather?’ etc.
